What is an arc chute used for?

In air circuit breakers, the Arc chute is used. A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is an example of an ACB. There are plates in a box at a fixed distance. An arcs is generated between the contacts of the breaker when the fault current is interrupted.
