What is the difference between 110 and 220 volts?

There is only one hot terminal and the hot wire is black. The wire size is one of the differences between the two circuits. The maximum wire size in a 220-volt circuit is 12 gauge, whereas in a 110-volt circuit it is 10 gauge.
