What is the difference between 2 3 4 wire RTD?

Where close accuracy isn't required, 2-wire RTD's are mostly used with short lead wires. A method for removing average lead wire resistance is provided by third wire. Is this true? The 4-wire bridge uses wires 1 and 4 to power the circuit and wires 2 and 3 to read.
