What is the difference between a lock washer and a flat washer?

The flat washers help to distribute the clamping force of the nut by increasing the surface. The use of the lock washer is a little different because they are usually used on the side of the nut of the fastening. The lock washers are frequently used in applications that involve vibrations that may tend to work the loose nut.
