What is the overflow pipe in a toilet?

If the toilet fill valve doesn't completely shut off at the end of a flush cycle, the overflow pipe is designed to transfer the water from the toilet tank to the toilet bowl and out the drain line. The height of the overflow pipe can be adjusted to prevent water from leaving the tank.
