During the winter, heat pumps can get cold. In the winter, heat pumps will naturally ice-up, but they will occasionally go into a defrost cycle to de-ice the coils. The unit is running well. Proper heat transfer between the refrigerant and the outside air can't take place if the coils are blocked.
