What size pipe to use for sink drain?

There is a size of the pipe. Most modern drains have a 1 1/2 inch outlet, but older sinks may have a drain that connects to a 1 1/2 inch tailpiece. All the pipes that connect to the tailpiece are 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
