What type of wire is used for gfci?

14-gauge wire can't be used on a 20-amp circuit according to the National Electrical Code. 12-gauge or larger wiring is required in these circuits. Installation of a 20-amp Ground-Fault Interrupter receptacle on a 15-amp circuit is not allowed under the code.
