Why are electrolytic capacitors polarized?
Electrolytic capacitors are polarized components due to their asymmetrical construction and must operate with a higher voltage (i.e. more positive) in the anode than in the cathode at any time. Therefore, the terminal of the anode is marked with an extra sign and the cathode with a less sign.
