Why do you put salt in a dishwasher?

Adding dishwasher salt to the water in hard water areas will cause the calcium and magnesium in the water to be softened. In soft water areas, it is used. Is this true? If you don't use dishwasher salt, your dishes are likely to come out streaky and grimy.
