Why does engine overheat when ac is on?

Engine overheating can be caused by one of two possibilities. A failing AC compressor increases engine load. Is this true? Plugged or blocked cooling fins, fans that aren't working efficiently, or a water pump that isn't circulating coolant could all cause overheating.
