Why does external voltage increases with decreasing in with separate excitation?

The external characteristic of the DC generator is obtained by subtracting the drops due to Ia Ra from the generated voltage. Is that correct? Increasing the field current and increasing the generated voltage can help maintain the decrease in terminal voltage.
