Why does my sump pump make a loud banging noise?

The entire length of the drain pipe can be used as a transfer point for the vibration from the sump pump. A loud banging noise can be heard when the pump shuts off, as the pressure inside the pipe suddenly drops and it rubs or bumps into the surrounding wall or ceiling coverings.
