Why is 277 volts used for lighting?

Why is it that lighting uses 277 volts? Is this true? The phase-to-neutral voltage for 480's phase-to-phase is 277, which is what most industrial facilities get their power from. Industrial equipment and industrial scale lighting can be powered by the 480 and 277 volt wiring.
