Why is my TXV Freezing Up?
TechXpert verified by Ken Kontra
A frozen TXV is often the result of a refrigerant flow restriction. However, several other issues could be at play that deserve your attention. Your AC system may be on thin ice during the summer if its TXV is freezing — now’s the time to investigate the source of the problem and solve it before it threatens your whole system.
Let's Break the Ice
Rather than hoping for the ice to melt away on its own, tackle the problem head on and look for the symptoms for a frozen or failing TXV.
The Freeze is a Tease
Your TXV could be freezing due to: - Superheat is too hot - Low refrigerant - Excessive moisture in the refrigerant - Restricted refrigerant filter drier
Don't Give Your TXV the Cold Shoulder
Since the refrigerant filter drier plays a key role in providing clean, moisture free liquid refrigerant for the TXV, it’s important to look out for blockage in the system. If clogged debris is reducing pressure and flow within the TXV, the temperature will drop and cause ice to form on your evaporator coil. And when you see ice, you need to call in the pros to help.
