Why is there water in the bottom of my washing machine?

There may be a problem with the drain hose or the pump. The culprit could be a broken lid switch or belt. Is that correct? Water is pushed into the drain hose by the washer pump. The tub can be filled with the help of the drain hose that loops to the top of the machine.
